What is I&RS?
Intervention & Referral Services (I&RS)
- A school-based team process that identifies and supports students struggling academically, behaviorally, socially, or emotionally.
- Designed to provide early, targeted interventions within the general education setting.
- Focuses on problem-solving and collaboration among teachers, counselors, and administrators.
What is the purpose of I&RS?
- To support students before considering higher levels of intervention.
- To develop and implement strategies that address individual student needs and provide additional classroom supports.
- To build communication between school staff and families.
What is the I&RS Process?
- Referral: Teacher, counselor, or parent identifies a concern.
- Information Gathering: Team collects academic and behavioral data.
- Team Meeting: Members discuss concerns and brainstorm strategies.
- Action Plan: Specific interventions and supports are outlined.
- Implementation: Strategies are put into place in the classroom.
- Follow-Up: Progress is reviewed and the plan is adjusted as needed.

- Classroom Teachers (General Education & Special Education)
- School Counselors
- Child Study Team Members
