Diabetes/Glucose

N.J.S.A. 18A:40-12.11-21 requires school district boards of education to take specific actions to ensure the safety of diabetic students as they manage their disease in the school setting. Pursuant to this law, the Lenape Regional High School District shall permit diabetic students to carry and self-administer prescribed blood sugar testing and insulin in any area of campus without the supervision of the school nurse. The law also mandates that information regarding the student’s medical condition be shared with appropriate school personnel, including teachers, coaches, bus drivers, and others who have volunteered to receive training in emergency care of diabetics. These trained volunteers would be available for extra-curricular activities, in the absence of the school nurse. Their primary responsibility will be to recognize the symptoms of severe low blood sugar and to administer glucagon via injection.

In order to facilitate meeting the requirements of the law, it will be necessary for parents/guardians and their family doctor to complete the Diabetes Medical Management Plan below and return it to the Student Health Office prior to the beginning of each school year. It is equally necessary for parents/guardians to provide their child with blood glucose testing supplies, insulin, syringes, and a glucagon kit which the student should carry while at school. Please bring an adequate supply of snacks and juice for the child. If the child will not be carrying their supplies, please bring the supplies to the Student Health Office labeled with the original pharmacy label.

Please be advised that the Lenape Regional High School District and its employees or agents shall incur no liability as a result of any injury arising from the self-administration of medication by the child, and that parents/guardians must agree, by completing the Diabetes Medical Management Plan, to indemnify and hold harmless the school district and its employees or agents against any claims arising out of the self-administration of medication by their child. In addition, neither the school nurse nor trained diabetes volunteer shall incur any liability as a result of any injury arising from administration of medication to the student.

The Diabetes Medical Management Plan is effective for the school year for which it is granted and must be renewed for each subsequent school year.
